Are you from Canada?

The first day I arrived in Estancia, Iloilo (Philippines) with CERV Philippines we were taken to meet the people of the tent city.

It was a really emotional day for us seeing entire families compacted into tents manufactured for sub-zero conditions (Estancia is a tropical climate similar to Cairns or Darwin). It’s bloody hot and bloody humid.

The tent city was created on a school oval following Typhoon Yolanda, and at its height, was housing over 100 families. There is no shade, the oval is completely exposed to the intensity of the sun.

Despite the difficulties of the heat, let’s not remove the kudos to the Canadian government for creating the whole thing.

So I was wandering around when a young girl came up to me and asked ..

“Are you from Canada?”

I had a inward chuckle after my “Canadian” experience in Manila.

I told her no, I was from Australia.

“Well,” she continued, “my World Vision sponsor is from Canada and he is a policeman. He writes to me and sends me presents too.”

“One day I will go to Canada to meet him.”

I was so stoked because I have been sponsoring a child in Ghana through World Vision for a number of years. I write to her regularly but I guess you always wonder what those kids think of you; or if they think of you at all.

Big thumbs up to World Vision. Also note that the women and children’s space in the tent city was sponsored by World Vision Canada.
