More than two months of summer vacation ended yesterday as Jerry trotted off to class in his school uniform and shiny new school shoes. He was super excited.
Part of the excitement is being allowed to get his own tricycle after class (this little bit of independence and autonomy has delighted him). While it is awesome to finally be able to work uninterrupted during school hours, I confess I was happy to hear his little voice calling me from the bottom of the stairwell yesterday afternoon to help him carry his heavy school bag.
When I got there I found him wearing a big grin, a bright pink name tag and a Mickey Mouse party hat (one of his classmates had a birthday party). This is one of the things I really love about Filipino kids: their love of dressing up and their excitement at wearing party hats, dancing and singing without feeling like they’re too grown up or sophisticated for birthday parties.
He did protest about the photos but I said to him “You won’t always be 9 years old and maybe you will never come home from school again in a party hat. You look so happy I want to capture this little moment forever.”
“Ok Tita Mel” and smiled his big smile.
