If you missed the livestream of our World Literacy Day celebrations you can watch the replay here. Children’s author and poet, Dr June Perkins joined us live via Skype and the children of Botongon sang and performed too. Please note this was my first experience live-streaming and quite a bit of the footage seems to have been cut. I’m working on a way around this for the future as nearly all of my shout-outs and thanks you’s were lost in the latency.

The children were thrilled when “Ma’am June” appeared on the TV screen and when she began reading one of her poems the children were literally mesmerised. Getting these children to sit still and pay attention can be really challenging so I was delighted with this candid shot below.

June also spoke to the children about her experiences in 2011 when Cyclone Yasi tore through her town destroying her home. All of these children lost their homes in Typhoon Yolanda in 2013 and connected with June very quickly. They spoke about her enthusiastically after the cameras were turned off and eagerly watched the whole thing again when the replay became available.

In a confidence building exercise all the children spoke into the microphone and some of the older kids delivered short speeches. Heart, the little girl speaking in the video below had been rehearsing for days and days to memorise her thank you speech to June. During the rush at the end I forgot her and found her crying, overcome with disappointment because I had already turned off the livestream. I recorded her speech a little later and share it with you now.

  1. https://magicfishdreaming.com/2017/09/13/world-literacy-day-with-the-kids-of-botongon/ – Such a lovely and memorable experience. I only wish I could have been there in person. May the power of poetry continue its magic and thanks to everyone, and to Heart! I too had tears a few times, but mostly of happiness to connect through the power of the internet, poetry and friendship.

Thank you June. It was wonderful and I feel so inspired to do more of these livestream hookups to connect and inspire these children.

I also had those tears, and like you mentioned shortly after the livestream, when connections are made in pure truth and alignment, only joy can follow.

      1. I see many future events and developments for your path Mel. So happy to have been part of it.

Thanks Jodie, so glad you watched. I was almost in tears during the song too. The kids love learning new songs and this was the first time they had an audience so it was awesome for them too. Mel xx
