Description
A Friend in Need cross stitch pattern is a replica of the most popular painting from the Dogs Playing Poker series, by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge. In 1903, Coolidge was hired by the advertising agency Brown & Bigelow to produce a series of 16 paintings to be used as promotional calendars, prints, and packaging illustrations.
In this familiar scene, a white bulldog (with a big pile of poker chips) slips the ace of clubs under the table toward his friend (with an equally tall pile of chips).
The Project
This is a large, full coverage cross stitch and the finished piece measures 72.6 x 56.1cm when stitched on 14 count Aida cloth. There are plenty of fun details to stitch including the bright red paneled light, faded wall paint, nautical-themed wall painting, poker chips, pipe smoke, dog collars, and the clock sitting on 1.11am.
It’s a challenging project as there is a lot of confetti and thread changes, but not to worry. A Friend in Need cross stitch pattern works perfectly with the Pattern Keeper App. Look for the extra PK chart in your download pack.
The Artist
Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (aka Cash Coolidge) was a self-taught artist, illustrator, and sometime hustler who gained worldwide fame for his infamous Dogs Play Poker series. The paintings are so much fun that I have charted six of them for you to stitch.
