Description

The Black Brunswicker cross stitch pattern is a close replica of the famous Sir John Everett Millais painting (1860). I simply adore this scene of a enamored couple (dressed in 1800s high fashion) in an emotional farewell. And there are so many exciting extras to stitch: the faithful black dog with red bow, the lady’s red sash, the decorative wallpaper, and the famous Napoleon painting on the wall. It’s marvelous stuff.

The Brunswickers

The Black Brunswickers were an infamous military unit from Germany who are remembered for their volunteer status, fearsome presence in battle, and (of course) handsome black uniforms.

Millais was inspired by the Brunswick Cavalry at Waterloo, who (Millais writes were) “were nearly annihilated but performed prodigies of valour”. Also interesting to note is the male model for the painting — he was an actual solider and died in battle shortly after the sitting.

The Project

Are you ready for a challenge? Please check the chart specifications before buying this pattern.

Black Brunswicker cross stitch is a very large full coverage project that is more than 100cm along the tallest edge — 380 x 574 grid area, 218,210 cross stiches, and 153 DMC different colours. That said, I think you’ll be delighted with the extraordinary detail including the silver skull on the soldier’s hat, the radiant satin gown of his lady love, the matching red bows, and etching of Napoleon in the background. Even the uniform buttons and boots have a lustrous sheen.

Pattern Keeper

Your download pack contains an extra chart that has been specially formatted for the Pattern Keeper App. Due to the size and complexity of this project, I recommend importing this chart into PK and using the App’s excellent features to mark your stitches and track your progress.

The Artist

If you love the artworks of John Everett Millais and the Pre-Raphaelite painters, I have lots more in the store to choose from. Millais lived from 1829 – 1896 and is famous for his gorgeous paintings of literary characters, religion and mythology.
