Description
Orange Marilyn Mini cross stitch pattern is a minimalist interpretation of Andy Warhol’s 1964 screen print. It’s a small, full coverage project that uses a splattering of colour to create depth and that grainy, pop art feel.
The original Orange Marilyn was one of the iconic ‘shot Marilyns’ that were fired at with a revolver during a slightly weird performance art session at The Factory. Andy Warhol believed the artist intended to ‘shoot’ his art pieces with a camera, not a REVOLVER! After rescuing the 5 x screen prints (including Orange Marilyn), he subsequently banned the artist for life from his arthouse.
Orange Marilyn fetched a cool USD$17.1 million when sold at auction back in 2017. Now you can stitch your own little piece of history.
The Project
I designed this miniature cross stitch as a fun project that won’t take long to finish. It measures just 9.3cm x 9.3cm (2,601 stitches) when stitched on 14 count Aida. You’ll need 33 different DMC colours and a couple of days. I was able to stitch this over 4 evenings after work and greatly enjoyed the project.
Matching Patterns
If you’re looking for something different to cross stitch, why not mix and match my [coming soon] selection of 12 brightly coloured Marilyn Minis. The shot Marilyns and other celebrity appropriations by Andy Warhol are now an instantly recognisable part of 20th century pop culture — and they look great in cross stitch.
Each mini project has 51×51 stitches (9.3cm x 9.3cm on 14 count Aida) and will certainly add some style to tote bags, cushions, and clothing.
