Description
Sage Blue Marilyn mini cross stitch pattern was inspired by Andy Warhol’s Shot Sage Marilyn, now the most valuable artwork ever created by an American artist. It sold at auction for a whomping USD$195 million in 2022. Not bad for a screen print!
I just love the funky colours and the overwhelming fact that Marilyn Monroe still looks sexy, even after being screen printed AND cross stitched. Incredible.
The Project
I designed this miniature cross stitch as a fun project that won’t take long to stitch. It measures just 9.3cm x 9.3cm (2,601 stitches) when stitched on 14 count Aida, and requires 31 different DMC colours to pack in the detail. I’ve used a couple of 3/4 stitches on Marilyn’s right eye, but a full cross stitch would still do nicely.

Did you know?
Sage Blue Marilyn was one of the iconic ‘shot Marilyn’s’ that were damaged by pistol-fire during an impromptu performance art session. An infuriated Andy Warhol banned the artist for life from the factory (he thought she intended to shoot his artwork with a camera) but was able to repair the paintings!
Matching Patterns
If you’re looking for something super cool to cross stitch, why not mix and match my different coloured Marilyn Minis. Apart from Sage Blue Marilyn mini cross stitch, you’ll also find orange, turquoise, duck blue, grey, candy pink, green, and mustard Marilyns. They all measure 51×51 stitches (9.1cm x 9.1cm on 14 count Aida) and will certainly vamp up tote bags, cushions, and clothing — or your favourite wallspace.
