Description
Starry Night cross stitch pattern is a replica of one of the world’s most famous oil paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. The painting is currently on display at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York City, USA.
It’s hard not to love this gorgeous painting of an excited and energetic night sky. And we are thrilled to recreate the artist’s amazing brushstrokes in varying shades of royal, navy, cornflower, antique and baby blue. Perfect for the DMC palette.
The Project
This is a flattened version of Van Gogh’s Starry Night — so you can stitch the incredible colours without having to navigate confetti. The finished piece measures 68cm x 54.4cm (375 x 300 grid) when completed on 14-count Aida cloth with 112,500 stitches. Your download pack also includes an extra chart that has been specially formatted for the Pattern Keeper App.
The Painting
The Starry Night is now so famous it’s become a significant icon in pop culture. The actual artwork was painted over several days while Van Gogh was confined to the asylum at Saint-Rémy. The village in the scene is fictitious and scholars argue that the arrangement of stars in the night sky replicate the view from his asylum window. We can’t really be sure.
What we do know, is that window gazing did hold some significance for Vincent: note this extract from a letter to his brother about a month before painting Starry Night:
This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big.
Can you imagine him there in the window, gazing out at the night sky? Longing to paint but having to wait until morning when he was allowed into the garden outside. It’s a captivating vision.
