Training staff is something I really enjoyed during my career as a hospitality manager and HR professional. All that training helped me a lot when I was writing online training materials for a leading Registered Training Organisation in Brisbane for almost 7 years.
During my time as a contracted technical writer for the RTO I researched and wrote all the course materials for an online Certificate III in Hospitality: it was a great experience. Not only did it reinforce my practical knowledge of the hospitality and tourism industry but I was introduced to the standards of nationally recognised training packages and how they are regulated by ASQA.
Gaining a TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment was a great introduction to the assessment process, but 7 years of working with experienced individuals and being part of a technical writing team team through two major audits was the best learning possible. As a result I am now able to write and map complete units in both the BSB – Business Services Training Package and SIT – Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Training Package.
Since those days I have written complete units under the Business Services Training Package as well as written and collated all the resources and assessments for the Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety as well as the Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.
Writing a complete unit under the nationally recognised training framework involves downloading the correct qualification details, deciding what units to deliver, reading the guides for each unit of competency then writing and collating the materials so each of the Elements and Performance Criteria as well as all the Required Skills and Knowledge are addressed.
During the writing process it is important that every component of the learning materials is mapped back to the evidence guides found in the source documents on www.training.gov.au.
Are you an RTO looking to outsource your technical writing? Do you need someone with both practical experience in hospitality and business as well as excellent writing skills? As an experienced freelance technical writer I have both the writing chops and time management skills in personal productivity to work remotely and deliver everything you need to meet the compliance requirements of ASQA.
But writing great training courses isn’t all about compliance and mapping documents. I also have the skills to write fun and imaginative materials that maximise student engagement. Students need a mix of text, images, video and activities to keep them engaged and motivated to finish their training.
