Description
Sitting Up With a Sick Friend cross stitch pattern is a detailed replica from the Dogs Playing Poker paintings, by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge. In this popular scene, the dogs are well into their card game when the wives suddenly burst in (at 11:11pm no less), upturning cards, loosening umbrellas (and their tongues) onto the hounds.
One old dog is down on all fours trying to get out.
This image is one of the most famous (most popular) from Cash Coolidge’s infamous series of anthropomorphic dogs. Now you can stitch it for yourself.
The Project
Sitting Up With a Sick Friend cross stitch is a large, full-coverage project and the finished piece measures 72.6 x 56.1cm when stitched on 14-count Aida cloth (400 x 269 grid size). You’ll need 148 different DMC colours and the project contains 107,600 cross stitches.
It’s a fun stitching experience and you’ll enjoy details like the facial expressions of the dogs, the drinks on ice, cigars, the clock sitting on 23:11, and garish upholstery in classic kitsch colours.
It’s quite a challenging piece so take your time. I recommend using the Pattern Keeper App to manage your project and have included an extra PK chart in your download pack.
The Artist
Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (aka Cash Coolidge) was an American painter, most famous for his Dogs Playing Poker paintings which were commissioned for a series of calendars and promotional packaging in 1903. I have more replicas of Coolidge’s work here in the store and have been steadily working on the whole set of 16 x paintings. Here’s the current selection.
