Description
Turning the Soil cross stitch pattern was inspired by the rural paintings of Australian impressionist artist Tom Roberts. This is one of his lesser known paintings but I immediately fell in love with the rich yellows, golds and earthtones and I just had to chart it into a cross stitch. I hope you love it as much as I do.
The Project
This is a large full coverage cross stitch and it’s definitely a challenge. The finished piece measures 36.3cm x 69.8cm when completed on 14-count Aida cloth (grid size: 200 x 385) and you’ll need 145 different DMC colours. All-up you’ll be making 77,000 cross stitches.
Due to the size and complexity of Turning the Soil cross stitch, I recommend using the Pattern Keeper App to manage your project. Look for the extra PK chart I’ve placed in your download pack.
The Painting
Not a lot is known about his particular painting. It is thought to have been painted around 1886 but was never signed. The painting is owned by South Australian government and (at the time of writing) is on display at the Art Gallery of South Australia.
The Artist
Tom Roberts is one of Australia’s most beloved artists — even though (technically) he was born in England. His interpretation of shearing sheds, ship crossings, bushlands, and bushrangers, have earned him a special space in Australian folklore and culture.
