Blencoe Falls, on the Kirrama Range Road

Leaving Mission Beach to the wet season was a great opportunity to cut across the Kirrama Range Road — which has been closed for many years and finally open again — to visit Blencoe Falls.

I passed through on a stunning late-summer morning and the countryside and grasslands looked incredible after a recent deluge. And I do mean deluge as the road was still underwater further up the mountain.

Video 1: The Falls. Doesn’t the sound of the wind and the steady thrum of insects emphasise the incredible peace and isolation of this place?

Video 2: Driving. I know it was really naughty to do this, but the day was so stunning, the landscape so green, and the cattle so inquisitive, I just wanted to capture some memories of this beautiful place.

Video 3: Flood. After driving for hours and hours up the mountain, I was stopped by this flooded bridge. Rather than turn around and drive all the way back to the coast I pulled up to make a cup of tea and decide what to do next. I owe a big thanks to farmer Brett who happened upon me an hour or so later and guided me through the waters to the other side. It was so empowering following Brett’s 4WD over that flooded bridge — I don’t think I would have been brave enough to do it on my own.
