the sand scorched
heat and absence
onto this burnt afternoondusk.
our monsoon rains are late this year
gone like the sunnot yet tonight (but oh the tonight)
dogs will sleep
inside fresh holesdug into cool sand.
where has the sun gone?
(I don’t know?)unseen
her sting
biting still

Visiting Piagao Island, Guimaras for an eco-camp last weekend was wonderful — but the heat when we first arrived was overwhelming. I was so grateful as the hotness of the day began to recede, but even in the late afternoon dusk, the sun’s intensity lingered.
The next morning as I explored the tiny island before the sun gained momentum I grinned from ear to ear when I discovered large sleeping holes beneath the palm trees — bored into the sand by the island dogs.
I too wanted one of those cool sandholes.
